A bit about us

Over 80 Years of Two-Wheeled History in Sheffield

A cycle shop has operated from our Catchbar Lane location for more than 80 years, making us a bit of a local landmark in the Sheffield cycling scene. To put that in perspective, we’ve been here since before the Peak District was even designated a National Park.

The shop’s lineage is a bit of a local legend. Bert Beech ran the show from goodness knows when until 1964, at which point the namesake Tony Butterworth took the handlebars. Tony steered the shop with a steady hand for nearly forty years until 2001. Chris Faulkner then led the charge until July 2015, and today, the new proprietors Henry and Mike are at the front of the pack. We are incredibly proud to inherit this legacy and look forward to keeping the wheels turning for many years to come.

Quality, Service, and a Bit of Steel City Grit

Tony Butterworth Cycles has built a long-established reputation for customer service that you just don’t find at the big-box retailers. We don’t just sell bikes; we live them. Whether you’re commuting through the Sheffield hills (and let’s face it, they are proper hills), hitting the trails at Grenoside, or heading out into the Strines for a Sunday epic, we know exactly what you need because we’re riding those same routes.

Beyond the Showroom Floor

While we stock a curated range of quality cycles and components, the heart of our shop is the workshop. We’ve maintained the high standards of repair and servicing that the people of Sheffield have trusted for decades, but we’ve also expanded our horizons.

We specialise in full restorations and custom builds. Have an old steel frame gathering dust in the shed? We love nothing more than breathing new life into a classic, blending vintage soul with modern performance. From precision gear indexing to bespoke dream builds, we approach every nut and bolt with “Steel City” pride.

Pop in for a chat—we’re always happy to talk shop, argue about the best local climbs, or help you find your next favourite ride.

What Our Customers Think

Mu Hussin★★★★★

Visited several times for repairs, servicing and parts. Always friendly and knowledgeable, very reasonably priced workmanship. My strong recommendation for anyone with a bike in the area.

I was on route from Manchester to Rother Valley Park and had developed a problem changing between chain wheels. I visited TBC who very kindly fitted new brake levers and gear shifters (which I'd been meaning to change anyway), thus solving the problem. It was all done in 30 minutes for £67. Great service.

Was recommended here by another bike mechanic in Sheffield when they didn’t have the time to fix my spokes. Fantastic service and lovely guys here at Butterworth -£39.99 for spoke fixing and tubeless re install (was quoted £60 by other bike shops!)

Took an old road bike in I had neglected for a few years in the basement and asked for a quote after a full inspection to get it road worthy again. They had great communication detailing what did and didn't need doing and then had all the work done quickly under the initial quote. Highly recommend!

Bernie K★★★★★

A proper bike with great staff. Updating an old bike, went in with the old components. A very helpful guy found all the replacement components, gave me advice on fitting and pre-greased the parts, and at a very fair price. This would have taken me ages to work out the parts and find them on the internet and probably for a similar price. Highly recommended, will be using them again.
